Bill MacCormick was born in 1942. He studied art at the Elam School of Fine Art, Auckland, New Zealand where the emphasis in the late 1950s was on drawing. In the 1960s, he worked as a graphic designer.
His
early art included many watercolours painted in the Tongariro National Park.
Later paintings have dealt with a wide range of subjects from landscapes, interiors,
portraits, still life, to the surreal. Of special interest to him is the emotional
power of buildings in the landscape that tell of those who have gone before
us.
The watercolours of the Nineteenth century explorer artists were an early influence, as were the impressionist painters, Renoir and Degas.
Bills original paintings are in private collections in New Zealand and overseas, including Britain, USA, Australia, Germany, and Japan. The prints and cards from his paintings have gone to many parts of the world. These images are in some way a record of our contemporary lives in New Zealand.
Since the late 1980's, Nicolas & MacCormick have published reproductions of Bill's paintings as prints and cards, and they can now be purchased through this website.
